AGNEW'S PERFECT DAY HELPS TIGERS CLAIM PAIR OF SHUTOUTS

Clarksdale, Miss. - Bre Agnew concluded an incredible week on offense for the Northeast Mississippi Community College softball team with a perfect afternoon on Friday.

Agnew was a flawless 4 for 4 with two extra base hits to help the Tigers sweep Coahoma Community College by scores of 17-0 and 16-0 at the Eddie C. Smith Sportsplex.

The freshman from Booneville began a huge third inning for Northeast in the nightcap with a line drive double to left field. She then scored one batter later on a fielding error to extend the Tigers' lead to 6-0.

Becky Robinson, who reached second base on the miscue, stole third and scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-0 in favor of Northeast.

Marla Rudd then started a stretch of four straight hits by the Tigers. Mirah Terry had a RBI infield single while Chelsea Buntin and Yasmeen Cooper both crushed run scoring doubles into the left field gap to give Northeast a 10-0 advantage.

Agnew capped what turned into an eight-run frame for the Tigers moments later with her team-high sixth homer of the season. The two-run blast plated Trenisha King and put Northeast ahead 13-0.

Rudd wrapped up the inaugural three-hit performance of her young collegiate career in the fourth with a double to centerfield that scored courtesy runner Audrey Goss.

Cooper accounted for the final two runs of the contest with her third double of the day. The Houston native now leads a squad that has 75 total doubles, which is tied for third most in the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC), with 11.

The Tigers (17-23, 12-8) took an early 2-0 lead when Buntin and Cooper raced home on Bianca Chagolla's opposite field double.

Walnut's Robinson followed with a RBI triple, the first of her career, that scored Agnew from first base to put Northeast ahead 3-0 after one complete inning.

Chagolla's sacrifice fly and a RBI groundout by Buntin that brought Rudd home enlarged the Tigers' advantage to 5-0 in the second.

King and Abigail Rish both worked two innings in the run-rule shortened affair. King (3-2) garnered the start and earned the decision with one hit and one walk allowed.

Coahoma's biggest threat came in the bottom of the fourth when a walk and fielder's choice placed runners at first and second with two outs. But Rish got Danielle Lindsey to groundout to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard.

Northeast did not leave the opening game of its final road series during the 2014 regular season in doubt for very long after plating 12 runs in the first inning.

The Tigers sent 17 ladies to the dish and took advantage of five walks and also compiled eight hits in the frame.

Chagolla initiated a streak of 11 straight Northeast batters that reached base with a free pass. Avery Springer made the score 2-0 shortly thereafter with an opposite field RBI double.

Robinson connected on the first of two run scoring base knocks in the inning to widen the Tigers' lead to 3-0.

Sydney Martin then dropped in the inaugural double of her days in a Northeast uniform. Springer and Robinson touched the plate on the extra base hit from the Lafayette, Ind., product to increase the advantage to 5-0.

Buntin and Agnew also added RBI singles during the lengthy frame in which the Tigers chased Coahoma (0-20, 0-18) starter Gabrielle Lee.

Rish's RBI double in the top of the second plated Lacy Blakney for Northeast's 13th run of the game. Rudd successfully stole home on the following pitch to give the Tigers a 14-0 lead.

Northeast rounded out its scoring in the third on a wild pitch, passed ball and Blakney's RBI groundout.

Buntin (8-11) tossed her team-high eighth complete game of the campaign. She struck out three, walked none and gave up just two hits in three innings.

It was the fifth and sixth shutouts, respectively, for the Tigers this year. That number is ninth most among National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) members and tops in the MACJC.

Northeast looks to continue its push towards the state playoffs on Wednesday, April 16 when Holmes Community College visits Booneville. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m. at David Carnell Memorial Field.
