The Plex (Baseball)

The “Field of Dreams” Complex, affectionately known as The Plex, is the home of the Northeast Mississippi Community College baseball team.

This is the first time in school history that both baseball and softball will compete inside an on-campus venue. The overall seating capacity for the facility is 248 spectators.

Northeast partnered with scoreboard manufacturer Nevco to provide both its new baseball and softball stadiums with state-of-the-art video boards and top-of-the-line sound systems.

These are the first video boards installed on any baseball or softball field among the 15 total members of the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC). The video board towers above the right field wall on the baseball portion of The Plex.

The public address system sits on the same structure as the video and scoreboards The video board has a 420 by 240 pixel matrix and stands at approximately 22 feet wide by 13 feet high.

Adorning the very top of the structure is a decorative arch truss that prominently showcases Northeast’s tiger head and “NE” logos. There are multiple sponsorship spots on both the left and right side of the video board as well.

The video boards are the focal piece to what is one of the nicest complexes in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The Plex also includes an artificial turf playing surface, a two-story pressbox, new locker rooms plus an indoor hitting and throwing area.

Construction on The Plex started in August 2018. Northeast held an official dedication ceremony in front of a standing room only crowd on Saturday, February 1, 2020.

Completion of The Plex project took around 16 months with a cost of over $8 million. The foul poles sit 320 feet down both the left and right field lines while the center field wall is 390 feet away.

The first games at The Plex came on February 11, 2020, when the Tigers hosted Jackson State (Tenn.) Community College for a doubleheader. That same day Northeast picked up its first win in the new ballpark as well as the first doubleheader sweep.

JT Durham was credited with the first win at The Plex after earning the opening day start on the mound. He claimed the first strikeout in the new ballpark with the very first batter of the contest.

Offensively, Conner Davis scored the first run after he was hit by a pitch to open the game. The first home run also came off the bat of Davis, but that didn’t come until the sixth inning.

Landon Wilkerson took two first time items off the list. He knocked the first base hit, which also happened to be the first extra base hit, with a double down the left field line.

The Tigers used a 13-1 home record to help propel to number 10 in the NJCAA national rankings during their inaugural campaign at The Plex. However, that season was cut short due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic.

The first conference game was played on February 27, 2021 as the Tigers hosted Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Northeast’s first MACCC victory at The Plex came on March 3, 2021 as part of a twinbill sweep of Holmes Community College.

Northeast has played (and won) five extra-inning games since the opening of the new stadium with the longest game lasting 11 innings against Kaskaskia (Ill.) College. The most runs that the Tigers have scored in a game at The Plex is 14 in a run-rule victory over Marshalltown (Iowa) Community College.

The Plex also hosts area high school baseball games as well as multiple summer tournaments such as American Legion, 2D Sports and Prep Baseball Report.
