The Plex (Softball)

The “Field of Dreams” Complex, affectionately known as The Plex, is the home to the Northeast Mississippi Community College softball team.

This is the first time in school history that both baseball and softball will compete inside an on-campus venue. The overall seating capacity is 200 observers during softball events.

Northeast partnered with scoreboard manufacturer Nevco to provide both its new baseball and softball stadiums with state-of-the-art video boards and top-of-the-line sound systems.

These are the first video boards installed on any baseball or softball field among the 15 total members of the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC). The video board towers behind the left-center field fence at the softball grounds.

The public address system sits on the same structure as the video and scoreboards. The video board is 24 feet wide by eight feet high with a 300 by 180 pixel matrix.

The video boards are the final piece to what is one of the nicest complexes in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The Plex also includes an artificial turf playing surface, a two-story pressbox, new locker rooms and an indoor hitting and throwing area.

Construction on The Plex started in August 2018. Northeast held an official dedication ceremony in front of a standing room only crowd on Saturday, February 1, 2020.

Completion of The Plex project took around 16 months with a cost of over $8 million. The foul poles sit 200 feet down both the left and right field lines while the wall to center field wall sits 220 feet away.

The softball team had the honor of playing the first official games in the new stadium on Saturday, February 8, 2020 when they swept a doubleheader from Jackson State (Tenn.) Community College.

Ayriana Stoneback toed the rubber for the Tigers in that inaugural game at The Plex. She struck out the side in the first inning en route to pitching a shutout victory over the visiting Green Jays.

Jackson State’s Gracie Osbron recorded the first hit inside The Plex with a first inning double. It did not take long for Northeast to register its initial hit as Alexis McGreger led off with a single in the bottom of the frame.

Katelyn Matthews came up later in the first and delivered a two-run triple, which was the first extra base hit and RBIs in the stadium. The inaugural home run came in the fourth inning when Hannah Milhorn sent a solo shot over the fence.

Northeast was able to play two conference games on March 6, 2020 before the worldwide coronavirus pandemic cut the season short. The Tigers secured their first conference win inside The Plex by run-ruling Hinds Community College in the nightcap.

The first MACCC doubleheader sweep by Northeast in its new home came on March 16, 2021 versus East Mississippi Community College. The longest game was played on April 17, 2021 when the Tigers defeated Southwest Mississippi Community College in eight innings.

The most runs scored by Northeast in a single contest is 19 against Shawnee (Ill.) Community College on February 25, 2021. Through its first three seasons at The Plex, the Tigers have a combined record of 26-5 with a 13-3 mark in conference games.

The Plex also hosts the annual Northeast Mississippi Softball Coaches Association (NMSBCA) All-Star Games for high school juniors and seniors plus area prep and travel organization contests.
