KING'S RESOLVE NEARLY COMPLETES COMEBACK IN TIGERFEST

Booneville, Miss. – Trenisha King's failure in her first at bat of the afternoon on Sunday set the stage for a sound performance the remainder of the game.

King got Northeast Mississippi Community College within 60 feet of tying their matchup against Lincoln Land (Ill.) Community College, but the Tigers' comeback attempt fell just short in a 5-4 time-limit shortened loss in the final day of the 2014 TigerFest Tournament at David Carnell Memorial Field.

The freshman from Tuscumbia, Ala., struck out in her opening plate appearance, but became more determined after that set back.

"I just knew we had been struggling with being down on ourselves," said King. "I could just hear coach (Haylei Plummer) telling me to leave it in the past. Basically I just went up there with a clear head and focused on contact and hitting the middle of the ball and exactly what she said would happen did."

King belted a rocket that went under center fielder Payton Billups's legs in her next at bat. The single plus error plated Bianca Chagolla and got Northeast's bats into gear in the fourth inning.

Chelsea Buntin followed her two hitters later with a double of her own to bring home King and give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

Courtesy runner Audrey Goss completed the frame when she scored on an opposite field single by lefty Shannon Goode.

Northeast's 3-0 advantage would be short lived, however, after the Loggers (2-2) tallied five runs in the top of the fifth.

With two outs, Lincoln Land put together five straight hits. Three of those went for extra bases, including run scoring doubles by Rachel Wisner and Billups plus a Kayla Jacobs RBI triple.

Sadie Mosher entered the circle for the Loggers in the bottom half and recorded two quick outs, but a Chagolla single kept Northeast (1-8) alive.

King then poked a ball into right field that took an awkward hop past right fielder Katie Price. Chagolla rounded the bags while King pulled into third base standing with the first triple of her collegiate career.

"My thoughts were, 'Run, run, run," she said, then smiled. "I knew that I'm in this lineup for a reason, so I got up there and did what I had to do to bring the run in."

But Lincoln Land recovered from King's extra base hit to record the last out on a ground ball and clinch the win.

"We started seven freshmen and we're close, but I tell them all the time that close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades," said Northeast head coach Jody Long. "We can't wait around for a break to happen and capitalize on it. We've got to make some of those things for ourselves."

Buntin (1-3) had another solid outing with six strikeouts compared to just one walk, but took the loss after giving up eight hits and all five earned runs.

Katie Lange (1-1) pitched the initial four innings for the Loggers and captured the victory while Mosher earned the save.

Three Rivers 6, Northeast 0

The Tigers loaded the bases in the opening frame of their last contest after a hit by Haleigh Moffett, an error and a walk, but could not push across a run.

Northeast faced a similar situation in the fourth when Avery Springer and Marla Rudd had back-to-back singles. The duo then stole second and third base, respectively, to put two runners in scoring position.

But Erika Engelman (1-0) recorded a strike out to leave the pair stranded and stop the Tigers' final scoring threat. Northeast was retired in order during the last two frames.

Three Rivers (2-3) tallied solo runs in the second and fourth innings on groundouts. The Raiders then broke through for four runs in the sixth to put the matchup away.

Alexa Stockton cleared the bases with a triple that brought in three runs. She then came home on a Shannon Perrigo double to cap the scoring for Three Rivers.

Chagolla (0-4) allowed three of the Raiders' six runs and took the loss. She went five innings and gave up four hits, four walks and struck out three.

Sunday wrapped up a stretch of games in the TigerFest Tournament for Northeast against five opponents that combined to average 30 wins last year, including two schools what won 40-plus contests.

"It's the little things that we've got to continue to work on," said Long, "but playing quality competition early hopefully will prepare us for our division."
