CHAGOLLA STARTS SOPHOMORE YEAR WITH SOLID SHOWING

Decatur, Ala. – Bianca Chagolla had a brilliant opening day to her sophomore campaign at Northeast Mississippi Community College, but the Tigers came up short in their season lid lifters.

Chagolla connected for two doubles and pitched four great innings in the opener, but Northeast fell by scores of 2-0 and 14-4 at Calhoun (Ala.) Community College on Sunday.

The hurler from Riverside, Calif., earned the start in game one and took the hard-luck loss. Chagolla (0-1) struck out one and walked three while allowing only one earned run.

Allison Hodges scored Asha Holiday on a RBI single in the first and Hannah Dildine drove in Katie Brazier two frames later when she reached on an error for Calhoun's lone scores of the contest.

Northeast (0-2) got runners to second and third with one out in the seventh after Chagolla and Haleigh Moffett reached on singles and advanced one base on a passed ball.

However, Dildine entered the circle and recorded two straight outs for her initial save of the year.

Caitlyn Hayden (2-0) was the winner for the Warhawks. She gave up four Tiger hits and stuck out six.

Erica Clifton and Abigail Rish were tremendous in relief for Northeast. The duo kept the Tigers within striking range by now allowing zero runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Bre Agnew's Northeast debut started with a bang in the nightcap. The freshman from Booneville connected on a solo home run in the fourth for the initial long ball of 2014 for the Tigers.

Calhoun (3-4) tallied seven runs in the second, but back came the Tigers two frames later. A four-run inning highlighted by Agnew's shot and a RBI single by Moffett cut the Warhawks' advantage to 7-4.

However, Calhoun returned the favor in the bottom half. Seven Warhawks crossed the plate, four on RBI hits by Makenzie Childress, Meagan Bice and Lacey Burleson, to force an early conclusion to the matchup due to the eight-run rule.

Childress (1-1) claimed the victory for Calhoun, while Chelsea Buntin (0-1) took the decision for Northeast. The Alcorn Central High School product allowed just two earned runs in 3.1 innings.

The Tigers look to get back to their winning ways on Tuesday, February 18 in their home openers. First pitch against Dyersburg State (Tenn.) Community College is scheduled for 2 p.m. in a makeup doubleheader to be played at Booneville High School's stadium due to field construction at Northeast's facility.
