JACKSON, Miss. - Allen Hughes has secured recognition after a historic performance to begin the spring semester portion of Northeast Mississippi Community College's men's basketball schedule.

Hughes was honored as the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) Player of the Week for games played during the first few days of the New Year.

The Clinton native recorded a triple-double during the Tigers' victory over Volunteer State (Tenn.) Community College inside legendary Bonner Arnold Coliseum with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 14 assists.

It was the sixth triple-double by a Northeast player in the last 27 seasons. Ironically, it also happened six years to the date of the Tigers' last such performance by Bryant Givens versus West Kentucky Community and Technical College.

"He's shown a lot of growth over the last year-and-a-half," said Northeast head coach Cord Wright. "He's become really hard to guard. He's a matchup problem for guys with his size. He's got a lot more confidence in his game. Hopefully he plays well like that down the stretch."

Hughes also broke the modern-day program record for most assists in a single game. The previous mark of 13 was reached three times with JonDarius Warren being the most recent to do so in a win at Northwest Mississippi Community College on February 6, 2020.

"It feels good to be included in some history," Hughes said. "Thanks to my teammates for knocking down shots. I know they've got my back every game. I know I can count on them to help me and I can help them."

The 6-3, 180-pound guard was 4 of 8 from the field with one three-pointer and two made free throws in 25 minutes against the Pioneers. He added a pair of steals while his rebounding total was a game-high.

Hughes accounted for five of the first 11 points for the Tigers. His jumper with 15:07 remaining in the opening half started a 12-0 run that gave Northeast a comfortable double-digit advantage.

Eleven of his assists came prior to the halftime break. Hughes completed the rare feat with his final rebound off a missed dunk by Volunteer State with 7:15 to go in the contest.

He is currently eighth in the country and second in the MACCC with 6.9 assists per outing. Hughes is also one of three Northeast standouts averaging double figures in scoring with 10.3 points.

Hughes and Tigers begin conference play on Thursday, January 18 with a road trip to Coahoma Community College. Northeast returns home on Monday, January 22 to battle East Central Community College.
