JACKSON, Miss. - Northeast Mississippi Community College's student-athletes thrived scholastically during the 2019-20 school year despite disruptions to the traditional learning environment caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Fifty young men and women representing each of Northeast's competitive athletic programs were honored with Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) Academic All-State distinction.
This breaks the school record for most MACJC Academic All-State recipients. The previous mark of 40 was originally set during the 2016-17 campaign and was matched just one year ago.
"We are very excited about the outstanding number of student-athletes that received recognition," said Northeast athletic director Kent Farris. "It speaks volumes about the job that our coaches do emphasizing excellence both in the classroom as well as on the field."
The MACJC annually celebrates the intellectual achievements of individuals from each of its 15 member institutions. Athletes must complete a minimum of 24 cumulative hours combined between the fall and spring semesters.
However, sophomores in their final season of eligibility at the two-year level may qualify for these accolades by finishing just 12 cumulative hours with the appropriate grade point average (GPA).
Student-athletes with a GPA between 3.25 and 3.79 earn Academic All-State laurels while those with a GPA of 3.8 or higher garner the Distinguished Academic All-State award from the MACJC.
The baseball and football programs tied for the most honorees with 12, including sharing a dual sport standout in Shawn Dalton Weatherbee. Softball was not far behind with 10 of its 16 total members obtaining these scholastic prizes.
Northeast's traditional service district, which includes Alcorn, Prentiss, Tippah, Tishomingo and Union counties, was well represented with 17 selections. Corinth High School and Kossuth High School both had three alumni to acquire this commendation.
The following is the list in alphabetical order with sport, GPA and high school of the Northeast student-athletes that were recognized as either MACJC Distinguished Academic All-State or MACJC Academic All-State.
