BOBO BOOSTS NORTHEAST IN SWEEP OF ARCHRIVAL ITAWAMBA

Fulton, Miss. - Taylor Bobo remained sharp on the hill for the Northeast Mississippi Community College baseball program despite an over two-hour layoff between appearances.

Bobo picked up the win in relief in game one and then obtained a save during the nightcap to help the Tigers sweep rival Itawamba Community College by scores of 7-4 and 3-1 on Tuesday, March 22 at Roy Cresap Field.

"It feels awesome," said Bobo. "I'm ready to get back on the mound, honestly. I love closing out the game for these guys. They work their butts off every single day and I'm just glad I can be out here and finish it off for them."

The opener featured a nice pitchers duel early between starters Blake Bennett for the Indians and Northeast's Josh Stillman. Stillman received a no decision after lasting 5.2 innings with only one earned run conceded and six strikeouts.

The Tigers finally got to Bennett in the sixth. Garrison Howell walked, advanced to second when Andrew Lambert was hit by a pitch, reached third on a wild pitch and then scored on Bailey Walker's groundball double play to tie the contest at 1-1.

Itawamba (13-9, 1-5) broke the stalemate in the bottom half on a RBI single from Hagan Box. Timothy Rowe homered one frame later to increase the Indians' advantage to 3-1 after seven innings.

But Northeast plated six runs in its final two at bats to capture a second consecutive come-from-behind victory. Ryan Watts got the rally underway by taking a four-pitch walk with the bases loaded to score Bobo, who led off with a double in the left-centerfield gap.

Courtesy runner Cole Camp hustled home on a fielder's choice by John David Poss to once again even the contest. Walker touched the plate moments later on a wild pitch to give the Tigers their initial lead at 4-3.

Northeast jumped ahead for good in the ninth by sending eight men to the dish and adding three runs. Two errors by Itawamba preceded back-to-back walks that let Eli Murphree jog back to the dugout for what turned out to be the winning run.

Lambert and Walker accounted for the final margin with two consecutive RBI hits that brought in A.J. Rye and Isaac Sparks. The Indians got the potential tying run to the plate in the latter half, but Bobo (4-0) induced a double play and a popup to Murphree to secure the triumph.

Ryan Wesson (4-2) was magnificent in the second matchup of the afternoon. He came within one out of tossing his inaugural complete game with just three hits compared to six strikeouts.

"It was really good to come in here and only give up one run," Wesson said. "The coaches told me all week to come in and fill up (the strike zone) and good things are going to happen. That's exactly what I did."

The Tigers (12-12, 3-3) grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the third inning. Daniel Calvery singled up the middle and scored when a balk was charged against Itawamba hurler Jonas White.

The Indians temporarily tied the matchup on a solo shot off the scoreboard by Dalton Hudspeth, but the deadlock did not last very long. John Murphree's grounder in the top of the sixth was thrown away to allow Poss and Watts to come home.

Wesson and Bobo made that lead last by retiring six of the final eight Itawamba batters they faced. Bobo entered for the last out to capture his fourth save of the campaign in as many tries.

"We had a lot of guys play well," said Northeast head coach Richy Harrelson. "We've been harping on that bullpen all year about how important it is to come in and get us some stops. Those guys did outstanding on the mound.

"We put them through some serious situations in the fall and challenged them. I think that stuff is starting to show out here because they really dig in and compete for us."

Poss guided the Tigers offensively with three total base knocks on the evening while Bobo and Stillman both had multiple hit performances. Hunter Bronson also had a solid outing for Northeast during the first contest with 1.1 innings of work.

It was the second time in the last three seasons for the Tigers to sweep the yearly series from Itawamba. Northeast has now won nine of the last 12 meetings between the two teams.
