TIGERS RECEIVE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP RINGS AT FOOTBALL HOME OPENER

T

he Northeast Mississippi Community College men’s basketball program collected its just rewards following yet another successful season in 2021. The Tigers received their Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) championship rings on Thursday, September 9 during a special ceremony at halftime of the football home opener against Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. “The chemistry and the leadership that we had was tremendous,” said Northeast headman Cord Wright. “I thought our sophomores did a great job of laying a foundation and just leading the young guys to carry us through a year where there was a lot of different things going on.” Northeast president Dr. Ricky Ford presented the rings to the coaches, managers and student-athletes on the field at Tiger Stadium prior to the traditional halftime performance by the Showband from Tigerland. The bands were created by Balfour. The head prominently features a golden version of Northeast’s “tiger head” logo surrounded by several diamonds along with the phrase “MACCC CHAMPIONS.” One shoulder includes the italicized “NE” logo on top of the state of

Mississippi plus customized locations for a name and position on the team. The other shoulder has a replica of the MACCC gold ball trophy with the Tigers’ final record of 15-4 etched into the base. It was the seventh men’s basketball state title in school history and the first since 2000. Northeast also captured its second consecutive and 18th overall MACCC North Division crown in the process. The Tigers reached the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 23 championship game as well after defeating Baton Rouge (La.) Community College, Delgado

(La.) Community College and Hinds Community College in an expanded tournament field. Northeast earned all these achievements despite dealing with challenges associated with the continuing coronavirus pandemic and the most unique schedule in its traditionrich history. The Tigers participated in exhibition contests only in the fall semester. Northeast then competed in 15 regular season games, including just two nonconference matchups, after the Christmas holiday break. Northeast officially christened the

new year with a victory over Holmes Community College on January 21. It was the first of five straight wins for the Tigers, which included a thrilling 70-68 decision at East Mississippi Community College that featured a buzzer beater from Zeke Cook. The Tigers went undefeated at home for the second season in a row. Northeast went a perfect 9-0 inside historic Bonner Arnold Coliseum, which hosted playoff action for the first time since the 2004 MACCC Tournament. Northeast wrapped up the division and state titles with an 83-72 triumph versus Coahoma Community College on March 27. Jalin Rice led the way for the Tigers with career-highs of 22 points and nine assists. Sophomores for Northeast were Ken Lewis of Olive Branch, Cole McGrath of Booneville, Braxton Pritchard of Iuka, Ladarrius Spears of Okolona and Jacob Tracey of Fort Myers, Fla. The Tigers’ freshmen were Khari Adams of Detroit, Mich., Kylan Blackmon of Oxford, Asa Howard of Ripley, Deandre Hypolite of Breaux Bridge, La., RL Mattix of Columbus, Cooper McCleskey of Caledonia, Josh Mitchell of Tupelo, Jayvian Shaw of Calhoun City, Cook of Starkville and Rice of Madison. 3

SEVEN TOTAL TIGERS ATTAIN PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA RECOGNITION

A

solid core of defensive standouts and an offensive force are attracting plenty of attention ahead of Northeast Mississippi Community College’s 2021 football season. Seven total Tigers were recognized with Preseason All-America accolades by the Rivals recruiting network publication JCGridiron. “It’s great to see so many Tigers on this list,” said Northeast head coach Greg Davis. “They are a great group of players and we look forward to seeing their hard work pay off.” Five of these Tigers received Fall AllAmerica distinction from JCGridiron last year, including Keyshawn Cobb, Will Derico, Jamal Ellis, Jamarcus Smith and Tony Washington. A cornerback from Fort Valley, Ga., Cobb leads the way after earning Preseason All-America honors for the second consecutive campaign. Joining him on the first-team is linebacker Reginald Hughes of Tunica. Cobb is one of seven Northeast players that are taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility provided by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) in response to the continuing coronavirus pandemic. He recorded 15 tackles, including 13 solo takedowns, over six games during the previous campaign. Cobb had a career-high five stops versus Northwest Mississippi Community College. Cobb’s lone interception of the season came at a critical time in the Tigers’ win at rival Itawamba Community College. It set up a touchdown with less than one minute remaining in the first half that pushed Northeast’s lead to three possessions. Hughes’ recruitment blossomed during the offseason. He committed to the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) over the summer and also had offers from institutions such as

three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, three blocked kicks, two pass break ups and one interception. He has racked up double-digit tackles in eight of his 15 appearances in a black-and-gold uniform.
