Belmont's Allen leads Lady Tigers to win in season opener

Angelia Allen led the way for the Lady Tigers with 18 points and 11 rebounds in the season opener at  Bonner Arnold Coliseum on Monday night.

Allen's double-double helped propel Northeast to a 83-75 victory verses East Central Community College although the Lady Warriors Jaianah Matthew hit a game high 22 points.

"East Central is a good ball team but we got it going together as a team and it turned out to be a good ball game," Allen said.

Allen went 6-for-10 from the floor and 5-of-10 from the foul line and hit one for two from downtown.

"Allen is a star in the making along with Kay K. Tate and they are going to be big time players before they leave here as well as Katie Garvin," said Northeast head coach Brian Alexander.

Tate and Garvin both finished in double digits with Tate adding 17 points and Garvin dropped in 12 points in their collegiate debut.

"It was a great win, we dressed out players who had never played a college game tonight and for them to come out here under that kind of pressure and play with that intensity . . . you got to give them credit," said Head Coach Brian Alexander.

Both of Alexander's returning sophomores Kebrina Lucas and India Howard did not play due to injuries.

Northeast moved to 1-0 overall while East Central dropped to 1-2 overall.

Coach Alexander and company will travel to Wallace State Community College-Hanceville on Thursday of this week in another non-division match-up.  Tip time is set for 5 p.m.
