Booneville, Miss. - The hype for another basketball campaign at Northeast Mississippi Community College gets underway a bit early with its annual preseason opportunity to meet both teams.
The Lady Tigers and Tigers will host Late Night Madness for the fourth straight year starting at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 16 inside legendary Bonner Arnold Coliseum.
"It's just a great time to get basketball season kicked off," said Tigers head coach Cord Wright. "It's been a great experience. Each year it's grown I think in numbers and participants. We want to get the fans involved."
Student-athletes and coaches will interact with their supporters throughout the approximately two-hour long extravaganza. The two squads and Northeast's cheerleaders will be introduced at the beginning of the event.
The Tigers will showcase their acrobatic capabilities with a slam dunk competition while the Lady Tigers compete in a hot shot contest with the goal of racking up as many points as possible by shooting from select locations on the floor.
Both the men and women will display their skills from long distance with three-point contests. Fans will also get to join the Lady Tigers and Tigers on the court for a knockout shooting game.
The Domino's pizza restaurant in Booneville is giving Northeast students that are in attendance the chance to win some fantastic prizes, including free pizza, all evening long.
The Lady Tigers take the floor for an exhibition contest at approximately 9:30 p.m. while Wright's Tigers wrap up the festivities with a scrimmage of their own following the conclusion of the women's matchup.
"It's a personal thing for the community and for the players," Lady Tigers head coach Brenda Mayes said. "Our fan base gets to meet them one-on-one. They get to walk around and talk to them. It's an exciting night of fun activities."
Northeast has achieved unparalleled success on the basketball court in the Magnolia State. The Lady Tigers are the reigning Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) North Division champions and also a national title to their credit.
The Tigers likewise are one of the most tradition-rich teams in the entire nation as well with eight region crowns and 17 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Americans over the years. Northeast was ranked as highly as 21st in the country one season ago.
