CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Another scholastic record for the Northeast Mississippi Community College athletic department has fallen during the 2019-20 school year.

A total of 21 players from each competitive sports program at Northeast received National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Academic Student-Athlete Awards.

In addition, the baseball, golf, softball and women's basketball programs obtained NJCAA All-Academic Team designation for retaining overall GPAs of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Golf led the way during its first season back in action following a two-year hiatus with a sensational 3.64 GPA. The Tigers were four one-hundredths of a point shy of earning NJCAA Academic Team of the Year, which went to McCook (Neb.) Community College and its 3.67 GPA.

Softball captured this prestigious recognition for the seventh consecutive season and for the eighth time in the last nine campaigns with a 3.31 GPA. Women's basketball and baseball held GPAs of 3.22 and 3.1, respectively.

"These are honors that all areas from students to faculty to our administration can take great pride in," said Northeast athletic director Kent Farris. "I am very proud of all our student-athletes and the manner in which they represent us."

Softball had the most individual honorees for the third straight year with six. Katelin Senter of Tishomingo County High School and Vardaman's Anna Beth Lucius had near identical GPAs of 3.88 and 3.87 for second-team accolades.

Wide receiver Carson Banks of Northwest Rankin High School became the second Tiger in as many years to acquire the NJCAA All-Academic first-team decoration in back-to-back seasons.

Banks had three football teammates on this distinguished listing, including Cedrick Wilder, Jr., of Pelahatchie on the third-team with a 3.64 GPA. Saltillo's Jamarcus Smith, who topped Northeast in tackling as a freshman, and Nathan Barham from Ridgeland made the second-team with GPAs of 3.89 and 3.82.

Golf's Austin Shaw joined Banks as the only Tigers to accumulate a flawless 4.0 GPA for the entire year. Fellow Kossuth High School graduate Carson Wilder had a 3.68 GPA while Elba, Ala., product Dylan Moulton tallied a 3.69 GPA to amass third-team prizes.

Pine Grove High School's Haley Vick, who was the only athlete from a NJCAA member institution to be selected as a semifinalist for the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup, was a second-team pick with a GPA of 3.81.

Madeline Johnson of Itawamba Agricultural High School, who was one of eight sophomores on the women's basketball roster this season along With Vick, notched third-team commendations for her 3.68 GPA.
