Aspriona Gilbert has reunited with former colleague, teammate and trusted friend Chelsey Rhodes to be her assistant coach at Northeast Mississippi Community College.

Gilbert returns to the Magnolia State after spending last season at Dodge City (Kan.) Community College. She was a graduate assistant at her alma mater of Delta State University prior to that.

Rhodes and Gilbert played together during the 2015-16 campaign. Together they lifted the Lady Statesmen to a Gulf South Conference (GSC) Tournament championship along with a berth to the NCAA Tournament.

Gilbert was part of a significant turnaround during her lone year in the Sunflower State. The Lady Conquistadors compiled a 19-13 overall record, which was their most wins in a single season since the 2005-06 campaign.

Dodge City also hosted a playoff game for the first time in 17 years. The Lady Conquistadors defeated Cloud County (Kan.) Community College in that contest for their first postseason victory since 2014.

Combo guard and forward Bree Stephens was one of two Dodge City players that earned All-Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) honors under the watch of Gilbert. She finished fourth in school history with 51 blocks and tenth with 247 total rebounds.

The Myrtle native helped Delta State continue its tradition-rich legacy both as a student-athlete and as a coach. The Lady Statesmen reached the NCAA Tournament during Gilbert’s first of two years on headman Craig Roden’s staff.

Delta State concluded the 2019-20 regular season with a solid 21-6 record, which included a nine-game winning streak from late November to early January. The Lady Statesmen advanced to the GSC Tournament title matchup against Union (Tenn.) University as the number three seed.

Quantesha Patterson benefitted tremendously from Gilbert’s knowledge of the paint. She received All-American accolades from both the Division II Sports Information Directors (D2SIDA) and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) after averaging a double-double of 17.3 points and 13.4 rebounds.

Delta State bounced back nicely after a tough start to the coronavirus shortened 2020-21 campaign. The Lady Statesmen won six of their final 11 outings while Zyaire Ewing became the second of Gilbert’s post players to secure WBCA All-American distinction.

Gilbert made 57 appearances in a Delta State uniform from 2015-17. She reached double figures 28 times, including a 19-point performance as a senior in a victory over Lee (Tenn.) University.

She was one of three double-digit scorers for the Lady Statesmen that season with an average of 10.5 points. Gilbert posted her lone double-double at Delta State with 13 points and 10 rebounds against Barry (Fla.) University at the GSC/SSC Crossover in November 2016.

Gilbert came off the bench to score 13 points as the Lady Statesmen downed ninth-ranked Union in the 2016 GSC Tournament championship. She had 11 points one week later versus Nova Southeastern (Fla.) University at the NCAA Tournament.

She transferred to Delta State after an award-winning sophomore year at Northwest Mississippi Community College. Gilbert garnered all-conference and all-region recognition after accounting for 13 double-doubles and 17.7 points per game.

Gilbert also obtained National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Region 23 Tournament prestige after averaging 19.5 points and 11.5 boards in matchups with Jones College and Meridian Community College.

She tied a career-high twice with 29 points in triumphs by the Lady Rangers over Holmes Community College and Mississippi Delta Community College. Gilbert was Northwest’s leading scorer in 18 out of 26 contests.

Gilbert still holds the program record for field goal percentage at 70.2. She is also among the Lady Rangers’ top 10 all-time in both free throws made with 130 and free throw percentage at 71.

The former Clarion-Ledger Dandy Dozen selection out of Myrtle High School originally signed with Austin Peay State (Tenn.) University. Gilbert holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Delta State.
